Guess who’s back…
YES YES ME!
So I got back from India nearly two weeks ago after a month long trip in my wonderful motherland.
Those of you that know the deets, I primarily went their to get my wedding lehenga, outfits, and my bury (if that’s how you spell it). For those of you that don’t know what a bury is, its basically what the groom’s side gift the bride for the wedding. So I was extremely lucky because my lovely in laws said I could pick my bury. Picking my bury = mega intense shopping and I got some gorg outfits!
I also got lots of other wedding bits from India. Like my wedding cards, maiya bits and some other decor bits as well as well as the endless jewellery and shoes – I shopped literally till I dropped (I have the pic to prove it down below).
There is SO SO much stuff to talk about and I really don’t where to start Desi Brides but I wanted to give you my advice if you are planning a trip to India and to be fair I have learnt SOOOOOOOO much from my trip and I will share this with you over the coming weeks!
So first up I wanted to share the important things with you. And if you are a Sikh Bride and your ummming and arrrring about going to India, this is going to be super useful to you.
1. GO INDIA If you really aren’t sure about going to India and you think you can do all your wedding shopping here then I think you are insane. My personal opinion is that boutiques in the UK rip you off and the fashion here is completely different to India. To be honest I really don’t like the fashion here and in India there is so much variety its unreal and I really do mean unreal. Even if you wanted to hit up all the shops in one major city in one day I think that would be impossible because there is that many shops! The bridal collection over there is awesome and there is soooooooooo many options and tons and tons of choices. YOU WILL FIND YOU WEDDING LEHENGA there. Take it from me, I am so so glad I saved myself for India because I think If I had brought my outfit from here I would have massively regretted it. I have heard this from a lot of other brides too!
2. IT IS CHEAPER – I really don’t care what anyone says but it is cheaper in India. Yes its pricer than what you expect but it is so much cheaper and there are tons of bargains to be had! For example, when I was looking in the UK for my bridal outfit, £4-£6k was the going price but when I went to India I picked up my bridal lehenga for £1800!!!!!!! Yes £1800! And that was on the higher end. The boutiques were pulling out £500-800 pieces so you can def pick it up cheaper without a doubt. My beautiful dresses cost me £200 and these were full on lovely blingy dresses and for something similar in Birm or London you’re looking at around £700-£800
3. GO DELHI – If your a Sikh bride, you know the deal. Go Punjab and get your wedding outfit. HELL NO! EXPLORE INDIA BABY! OK maybe not all of India but at least Delhi! I had planned to go to Delhi when I was in the UK because I heard its awesome for shopping. So I took the plunge and just went for it. My mum thought I was a little crazy, but hey I am so glad I did because I got my wedding lehega from there. I wasn’t disappointed either. See the thing is, Delhi is even cheaper than Punjab! A lot of the markets were wholesale therefore that meant you got some great bargains. If you can go Delhi do it, its worth it over and over again. I was only there for 4 nights and I got my wedding lehenga in that time. But be prepared to go back and collect it as most pieces can take around 2 weeks. I am so glad I did go because the fashion and collections there are awesome!
4. GET OUT OF PHAGWARA If you are heading to Punjab for your shopping then I strongly recommend you get out of Phagwara. To me Phagwara is a massive tourist trap. The likes of Frontier and Deepak’s is flooded with Americans, Brits and Canadians and to be honest I really don’t see what the big deal is. I had a lehenga designed from Deepak’s in my bury and yes it is gorgeous. and its cool when they sketch it all out for you but there is tons of options elsewhere as well at a fraction of the cost! Don’t worry Desi Brides I will share my shopping hit list with you very soon! I definitely encourage you to go to Ludhiana and Jalandhar as its cheaper and the choices are also endless. Ludhiana was definitely my fave!
So that’s my update from India in a nutshell. There is so so so much more I want to share with you so keep an eye out on the blog!
